Torches of Inspiration

The Berlin torch was carried 3,075 km during
the first Olympic torch relay by 3,331 runners.
It is made of polished steel and was designed
by sculptor, Walter Lemcke, whose other work
included sculpting eagles bearing swastikas for
Hermann Göring's Air Ministry Building in Berlin.

On the torch shaft, there is a drawing of the
route of the torch relay with the German eagle
over the Olympic rings, together with inscriptions
relating to the Berlin Olympics 1936.
