Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby designed the London torch which won the Design of the Year award in April 2012. It is a three-sided golden cone which stands 800mm high and is made from two layers of laser-cut aluminium alloy. The torch is perforated by 8,000 circles, to represent each runner and each mile of the relay. The holes have also helped to reduce the weight of the torch and to keep it cool enough for the torchbearers to carry.
The triangular style echoes the multiples of three found within the ethos of the Games including the motto, ‘faster, higher, stronger’ and the three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship as well as being a permanent reminder that this is the third time that London has hosted an Olympic Games.
