The Olympic flame for the 1968 Mexico Olympics
retraced one of the voyages made by Christopher
Columbus. From Olympia, the flame travelled to
Barcelona, the city which welcomed him as a
hero after his discovery of America and then
on to Mexico by boat. The cauldron was lit by
the first woman, Enriqueta Basilio, at the Mexico
Olympic Stadium. The torch is a simple, fluted
and chiselled design which replicates the
'Mexico 68' logo used on the emblem and posters.
