The concept of this torch was created by an
Australian design company, whose brief was
to create a striking design which was uniquely
Australian. The torch form is symbolic of the
Opera House sails, the curve of an Aboriginal
boomerang and the blue waters of Sydney
Harbour. The torch consists of three layers
which represent earth, fire and water.
Cathy Freeman, the Aboriginal sprinter lit the
flame in the Olympic Stadium and went on to
win the gold medal in the 400m final.
