The designers, Georges Huel and Michel Dallaire
were keen to make the flame more visible in
photographs and on television which is why the
top of the torch is black. The stem is painted
red with a black top and the logo is prominent
on the handle.
For the first time the flame was carried by a
laser beam via satellite from Athens to Ottowa.
Unfortunately the Olympic cauldron went out
during a storm and had to be relit from the
back-up flame.
